Alaric I Baratheon was the King of Westeros and the head of House Baratheon of King's Landing from 369 AC until 390 AC.
Alaric was held to high standards as a lad. But the success of the father made him prideful. His reign was marked with instability as many of the regions had brewing conflict. A religious conflict erupted during his rule, nearly ending a schism.
Death[]
During the Third Targaryen Rebellion, King Alaric Baratheon rallied the Northern Crownlands and marched north to meet the enemy threat. At the same time. Lord Frey, wishing to have a different legacy than his infamous ancestor, gathered all of his available levies and the levies of the houses sworn to him and marched south at a blistering speed to Darry.
Aelyx took the Northern Crownlands and spent a few days consolidating his power before turning his gaze westward towards Harrenhal and the Riverlands at large. Hearing about the large royal army, rumoured to be lead by the King himself massing at Darry, Aelyx saw it as an opportunity to win the war before it even began. Waltyr Tully and Robin Royce severely admonished Lord Frey, and cautioned him to take a more measured approach. Lord Frey promptly threw said caution to the wind.
Aelyx set a cunning trap for the combined Royal Baratheon-Frey army. Taking advantage of Darry’s record breaking wheat harvest, he set the crops in massive piles all over the fields and began to wait. When the Royal forces arrive, Aelyx took flight on his dragon and set the fields ablaze for miles and miles. In the confusion, many died of smoke inhalation, while those who flee were cut down by Aelyx’s light cavalry. King Alaric the Arrogant tried to lead a desperate sortie, but meets his end at the gaping maw of a hungry dragon. Viserion locked its jaws around the torso of the King, tearing the Baratheon in half.
It is said that his steed rode on, its master's legs still firmly locked around the saddle upon its back, before succumbing to the smoke itself.
